Stay Tuned for the voice. It seems em mobile is rolling it out in phases. Hopefully one phase will soon be to Windows Mobile 6 :)

Taken from http://www.emobile.jp/en/business.html

EMOBILE Ltd. adopts cutting-edge technologies for its network, to offer “high-speed data communications”. We are developing unique business with the core strength of “innovation”. We are building mobile broadband services supported by the latest “HSDPA” (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) and IP network technologies. Initially, the service starts from data communications in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, and then expand to nationwide, upon the launch of the voice services.

Video and images that hitherto could only be viewed by using a fixed-line broadband access can now be enjoyed over a mobile access. To create a new broadband mobile market, we are promoting a seamless fixed and mobile broadband environment using IP network technologies. As a member of the eAccess Group, we aim to supply a total telecommunication service to consumers.

I checked this out yesterday in Bic Camera, Tokyo.

It's a nice looking device - the screen is really good and the keyboard and slider design pretty smooth - BUT - it is NOT a phone!

I know, it's crazy, but it only runs on the HSDPA network newly installed in central Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Nice and fast (3.6 Mbps), but no voice?? OK, we have Bluetooth, an Intel processor and Windows Mobile 5.0 (Japanese only at this point) so surely we can get a VoIP app on this pronto?

Also, I checked out the browsers (Explorer and Opera) - neither will run Google docs, spreads or calendar so Web2.0 doesn't get much of a nod. It does have '1 seg' TV though - which is cool - shame the content is so awful.
