Regarding the tail revisions, this is the economical tactic of delivering a small refresh in to its latest version to appea prospective buyers into purchasing a younger model year. They do it quite frequently with the front skirt and taillights. The E46 did not receive the taillight modernize until the late 03 versions I think.
