I was (till last Friday) a Systems Engineer for T-Mobile – here is my thoughts on the “fake fakes”

I ordered my SciPhone i68++ on Ebay “buy it now” last week. I got the phone a few days later. I have the Maui build with the Gold batteries.

    Version MAUI.07B.W08.16.MP.V4.F1
    Branch 07B
    L01_GEMINI_07B
    Build: Build_No
Serial No: 0513********** (as if my privacy matters)
    Build time 2009/05/19 18:28

When I 1st got my phone I had Emergency calls only error. Then when I turned my SIM upside down (reading the directions that came with the phone and not following the image on the SIM Slot. My Sim works. As a Matter of fact both SIMs work great. I looked up on T-Mobile.com http://tmobileuspublic.wdsglobal.com/ and followed the directions – Manufacture CECT P168P – I did this 2x once for MMS and 2nd for WAP. T-Mobile sent me a SMS with an install link for both. I installed WAP and MMS. Both work great.

Ok, so all the “Phone” functions work. After reading on forums I realized my phone was not a javquisoft OS. Although disappointed I did not have the OS I wanted I found out that there are actually 4 companies in China that make “SciPhone’s. This is a “real” SciPhone i68+ Phone with 2GB miniSD upgradeable to 8GB. I did write the seller on Ebay and told him that I had a “Fake – Fake” and he did not provide the miniSD in the box (it was missing from my box) and to get the “real” i68+ I would need to upgrade the firmware for $15. He returned $25 dollars to me. I was satisfied with this as I only paid $65 for this ok fake iPhone.

Where does that put me? Well I would really like to flash this “CAT” OS and get javquisoft or some other really good i68+ firmware for this phone. OR I would like to figure out how to configure the icons on this build so I can remove Chines Icons and reconfigure my VoiceMail Icon to my voicemail number.

Anybody know anything about this “CAT” Firmware? Is there any way to configure it from a PC? Can I buy a better firmware for this phone? If so can I use the USB – cord that came with the phone or do I need to buy something else?

Anyone else have info please post. My preference is to keep this phone and configure it correctly and possibly buy another one as soon as I know this one will work eventually. (Also if some of you can not get your money back I may consider buying it from you if I can get mine to work well).

    Thanks,

    • GM says:

You can go to mysciphone.com and order the usb flash cable for 18.50. This allows you to flash the firmware as this phone is technically an I68 not an I68+. For $34.00 more bucks you can upgrade to the javquisoft firmware if the build date is available. Unfortunately the build is not available yet. I am in the same boat, hopefully this will get you up to where I am..at least-

These phones won’t except large MMS. To get these phones fully functional, you will need to spend a lot of money. Go to mysciphoneshop.com and order a javquisoft firmware phone from them. It works 100 times better and they are in english lol

    hi,
can any one help me set up the internet on my p168c i have tmobile network

    • P168c hater says:

      nisha-44

There should have been instructions with your package on how to connect to the Internet with your phone. Even with the instructions programing the P168c to access the Internet is a nightmare.
Once I programed WAP, GPRS, MMS, this phone functioned terribly.
Once I did get it to connect to the net, after about 30 seconds,
I couldn’t connect to any article I wanted to read. No sports scores, politics, nothing.
Finaley after many phone calls and e-mails with the seller, I returned my P168c to him so he could program it. I just sent it back to a seller in California, It’s only been 3 days. I will let you know.
I have a link with full instructions if I could get it to you I would send it.
I tried many times to program this phone. Perhaps I missed a step or something.
      Good luck!

I also bought the CECT P168C . I can not access the internet or even get mms. I have ATT or Cingular. How or what do I have to do to get the ineternet , Keeps saying GPS not subscribed. Or something like that…..

        • P168c hater says:

          Caryn,
Just today did I get MMS to work on my p168c. This, after over a month and a half of communicating with the seller trying to set up WAP. and MMS
I talked with ATT several times getting different stories. Finally I talked with someone at ATT who knew what they were talking about, and I mean FINALLY!
After you go through all 20 or so steps to program the phone to setup up WAP, you’ve got to be sure that you have contacted ATT and ask for your account to be able to access the Internet. Don’t go with pay as you use data. Definitely go with the unlimited data package. It should be $19.95.
If you are experiencing difficulty programing your P168c post here.

        • dt says:

Its not the phone .. you need a data plan. Just like with the iPhone .. You need a data plan.

    • GM says:

Go to t-mobiles website and enter in your phone. T-mobile will send you the settings via text and they will automatically install.

anyone who isnt an idiot know if this phone is any good yet? hows the responsivness, sound quality, battery life and build quality etc… anyone know?

    • Aviance says:

This phone is an excellent clone to the iPhone. It is equipped with every thing you would expect from a GSM phone and network. I have had my phone for over a month and I use two different U.S. cell phone carriers at the same time. It is like having two phones in one it is fantastic. The volume quality on it is wonderful. You can choose on whether you want it to be high or low. The speakers on the phone have good sound quality, so does the earpiece or bluetooth. The camera, webcam and mp4/mp3 player are all great, I have no problem with any. Downloading music, movies, videos and games is a breeze. Excellent phone, I would recommend this phone to anyone who can’t afford the high price iPhone version. This phone price ranges from $60 to $100 dollars, depending on where you buy it. Wonderful to have.

      • kev says:

Aviance may I ask where do you download games for the phone and what folder do you put it in?

        Thanks

      • JohnP says:

        Aviance. Your joking right?
This is a piece of shit phone. Even in light of being cheaper than the iphone, the differences in this phone compared to the real thing are astronomical. I wish I would have paid the extra money for the real thing.
I bought this piece mainly because I thought ATT was faster in surfing the web. After 10 days or so(the cash return policy was 7 days, with and exchange for 30 days) and numerous e-mails between the company I purchased this crap from, we screwed around trying the Nokia web site to activate the Internet . After about 2 minutes connecting to the Internet I finally got the headlines. Problem is, that when I tried to read a headlines however I could not connect to the article to read it. Now, the Nokia web site no longer supports the p168c. I would suggest to any one not to purchase this phone until they are guaranteed it will connect to web browsing.
It’s now been 30 days so I can’t even exchange this crap.

      • Caryn says:

What phone carrier do you have. And we did you go to download all the software you needed. I can not get internet or MMS. HELP….

        Caryn

        • JohnP says:

I know this sounds silly, anyway, did you alert your carrier that you wanted to be able to get the Internet added to your account? I played around with my clone phone for days only to find I didn’t have this option.

The p168c is not a 3G phone. It will never surf as a better quality one.

I bought a Motorola Qh and am extremely happy with it in all phases.

          I have ATT.

Go to you tube. Type ATT internet setup CECT P168. This should do it for you.

      • GM says:

LOl you are full of BS Avi, you are probably one of the power sellers on e-bay that sell these crap phones. Here is the real lowdown on these phones.

Once you waste endless hours online figuring out what you actually bought, the phone is 5.5 out of 10. The SMS text qwerty keyboard is about an inch and half wide so if your vision is crap don’t bother texting. You have to use a stylus as long as a tweezer to poke your message one letter at a time making texting a nightmare. Just sending a stupid text requires 3 steps. 1 type your message 2 if need to use numbers you have to write them on the screen with the stylus and they show up one at a time. The Chinese have no use for English numerals lol. 3 hit send….no wait there is no send button, wtf you say? just hit “Sim Done” and viola! you sent a text. Now receiving a text, that’s even easier. Since the p.o.s firmware doesn’t truly translate all of your contacts over to your poor mans iphone it will say “received SMS from 12563256″. So you hit the sms icon…nothing, you touch the screen… nothing. You have cancel the message, glide to unlock, select sms, select sim 1 or 2, select inbox and viola! you can read your text!! All my friends think I hate them because I don’t respond instantly.

Well…there is nothing instant about this phone unless you have the special Chinese SIM card that activates 75% of the non working apps. The apps that do work: The calculator, the world clock, settings, 3 of the 10 games and media player which by the way lags the sound and video lags so bad it’s like watching a kung fu movie. Oh did I forget to mention the 6 inch awesome top hat guy that dances on your screen the whole time your listening to an MP3. Again, save your money and buy a regular phone or go to http://www.mysciphoneshop and buy a Javquisoft firmware I68 the rest are just fake fakes like a transvestite with breast implants

        • Rhianna says:

          Hi,
I just want to say I also have the iphone clone, while I agree typing messages one by one is extremly slow and annoying your worng about the numerals. you can put the numerals in with out wrinting them on the screen. you can bring a number pad up just like the abc pad

        HI
Aviance, you seem to know what your doing. Im about to buy a clone. Can you stay in touch, so i have someone to bounce ideas off with? Hey Can you access the internet if so, does it have to be a unlimted data plan?

does the p168s have the same capabilities of the g1 and can it use the same programs
    because i have t-mobile

    • dt says:

No it doesn’t compare to the g1. It doesn’t compare to the iPhone either. But for $70 its a great touch phone. It works great on T-MObile and if you read this tread I posted the link to TMobile’s website that supports WAP and MMS.

Its not a great phone compared to 400 dollar phones. But compared to 70 dollar phones its great. Keep it in perspective. Your not locked into a contract.
