by Sze | Filed under Laptop
Walmart has announced that it will offer the Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM notebook at just $298 staring from 26 July 8AM. The Presario notebook is powered by an AMD Sempron SI-41 2.1GHz processor, 3GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics.
It has a 160GB hard drive and a 8X DVD SuperMulti burner. You can find a 15.6-inch 1366×768 LCD display and support for WiFi 802.11b/g, and Altec Lansing speakers. It’s really a bargain to get a 15.6-inch notebook for just $298. As expected, this is part of Walmart’s back-to-school promotion and limited stocks are available. So act quick.

To “Taynkal:”
I just saw your recent post. In general, I second your comments. But before you get a nosebleed on that high horse of yours, I’d like to quote from one of your passages: “….into a completely useless and stupid world through their texting and computers, and through their constant need to coddle and protect other’s feelings….spell things correctly, use proper grammer [sic], and stop patronizing everyone….People need to stop acting stupid….”
You will note that the correct spelling for the word preceding my “[sic]” is: g-r-a-m-m-A-r! -BTW, even as I typed out the misspelling, my spell-checker (which I don’t need)flagged that word in red. Furthermore, you should have written, “People need to stop acting stupidLY; it’s an adverb that’s called for, not an adjective!
So, in conclusion, it’s fine to insist on striving for high standards, but be a bit more gentle in coaxing others to comply, lest something might come back and bite you in the ass.
I just grabbed this laptop from walmart. I haven’t opened it yet because I want your opinion on whether or not it will be good enough for me. Here is what I will use it for: Mainly the internet, I usually have a few tabs open in firefox while listening to mp3s using winamp and writing something in ms word or using excel. That is probably the biggest workload I would ever have. I don’t need to play games other than online flash games. I like to download movies and watch them. Storing pictures. Printing documents. Will I be able to do these things without having to wait for things to load? I’m not very patient when it comes to computers. Another concern I have is that the laptop doesn’t have and top or side vents. Does it tend to overheat quickly?
The laptop is more than enough to handle your need.
What has to be done is to set it up for maximum performance since most laptop/desktop come pre-configured for looking pretty. Google is your friend.
This particular laptop has 3GB of RAM, enough to do a good job of what you described.
I have it for over a week now without a problem. I install Linux but you can do OK with Vista.
Good luck!
After all has been said and done, I have decided to return this laptop to Wal-Mart. Though it will handle light tasking, when it comes to any programs which require heavy drawing or a lot of processing power, the Sempron SI-42 simply does not have the power needed to perform these tasks.
If you simply need this machine for email, word-processing and basic internet browsing, it should be fine for you. Beyond that, you would do well to invest a bit more money for a better processor. It seems that even the 3GB of built-in memory and the nVidia card are not enough to make this the value I believed it to be.
I have an additional follow-up regarding this laptop and Linux installs. If you’re not tied into using a Windows product on this machine, you’re in good shape.
I have created a dual-boot so that the machine boots either into Ubuntu 9.04 or Windows 7, my choice. Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution around, and it works beautifully with this machine.
Everything plugged-and-played seamlessly with the Ubuntu operating system — the installation took me about 20 minutes to complete. There will be one driver, for the Nvidia 8200M, which Ubuntu does not find until after the system restarts; however, once it finds the driver and you allow it to install, you’re sailing smoothly.
I don’t know about other Linux distributions (though I did try PCLinuxOS first and it didn’t work at all), but Ubuntu was a breeze and runs on this machine like a dream.
Are they already sold out of this laptop? The website only lists it as a wish list or registry.
i hate yall mother fuckers imma 4shiz nit in mammas villa mofo in the ass u know wht im talkin about nigga da hizzy of yo i was like ey biatch get me my damn pimp stick bitch be4 i slap ur juicy black ass and thos big ass titties aint even real so stop actin like u high class bitch and start suckin my dick bbbiiiiaaatttccchhh
So do you reccomend the laptop? or is your biatch keepin you down from getting one?
Do you hate us because you don’t know how to use spell check? I’m surprised you didn’t go into a comma using what’s left of that noodle between your ears in sending the post.
Some people have expressed interest in downgrading CQ60-419WM to Windows XP, and there’s not a lot of information to go on out on the web.
This link will help resolve many of your questions (skip to Part 2 of the posting): http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/.....d.id=12776
I have done this with the machine I bought yesterday at Wal-Mart and, after several hours of research, I was able to find that link to enable the install to go very smoothly. For light tasking and simple needs, the system seems to run Windows XP very smoothly. However, as is alluded to earlier, this machine cannot handle heavy tasking or too many windows, regardless of operating system.
You will be hearing more about Windows 7 in the weeks and months to come. Installing Windows 7 on the CQ60-419WM is a breeze. I installed Ultimate from the RTM disc, it went extremely smoothly and I am running it as I type this. Windows 7 is considerably better than Windows Vista for this particular machine in my limited experience. You will find that there are no drivers yet made available for Windows 7 on this machine; however, you may temporarily install Windows Vista drivers for anything that doesn’t seem to work out of the box. In fact, once I got it running, it found and installed Windows 7-compatible drivers for all the hardware in this machine.
There are drawbacks –
a) The machine has no webcam
b) There are only 3 USB ports – no firewire, no HDMI
c) The DVD player will not play blu-ray discs (not an expectation @ this price)
d) The HD is only 160GB
e) The speakers are sufficent but not that strong
f) no PCI-Card slot
g) no built-in card reader slot
h) the processor speed is questionable
I imagine there are others I can’t think of. However, it’s a value-priced, entry-level notebook perfect for someone who can only really afford a Netbook but wants something a bit larger. The 3GB of memory and the nVidia 8200M video card make this value impossible to beat for the correct kind of consumer.
I just bought one today. Does anyone have an easy suggestion as to how I can remove all the preloaded stuff we don’t need? I am not great with computers so if there is a program or website with step by step instructions that would be great. Appreciate the help!
what store did you get it from?
Lisa- To remove unwanted programs, go into the “START” Menu, then “SETTINGS”, then “CONTROL PANEL”, then look for a tool called “ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS”. This will show you a list of all installed software – from this list you can un-install the stuff you don’t want.
FYI:
“Add/remove progs” has been renamed in Vista.
It is now the CP icon “Programs and Features”
Last night my friend called me and mentioned this laptop for $298 at Walmart. I told him that is crap, don’t ever trying to get it. He said he already bought it and on the way driving to my house. When I opened the box and read the specs on this laptop, I was kinda surprised with all the packs on this laptop for the price of $298. What I like a bout this laptop are: a true crystal/glossy 15.6 display screen, a G-force 8200M G light weight video card, and 3 Gigabytes memory. I had it updated to the latest patches from Microsoft and decide to throw couple game on it to test. Tom Raider Anniversary and Samurai Warrior 2 running fine on this. In my mind, this laptop is a true deal for basic users who wanna have a bit of gaming features on it.
I purchased this laptop yesterday for my 11 yr. old. The laptop will suit her fine since she’s not a gamer. I like the DVD dual layer option and it does have a large screen for the price. This will be used for downloading pictures from her camera and typing her essays. I’ve had an HP (same company) for a long time now and it’s been free of defects, although anything with moving parts has the potential to fail. I went with this laptop because of the hardware and price. I don’t think you can get a better laptop (new) for the price. I only wish the manufactures would load them up with the latest patches, I was updating all night. Including service pack 2 for vista. All in all, it’s a good starter laptop for basic use.
This is definetly a good price for a laptop computer with the specs that this one has. I just bought it from Walmart yesterday. They only had ten of them for sale and in the first hour they sold all ten. I have not used it much since yesterday, but from what I have seen it runs great. The processor is a little weak for those of you who are gamers, but for anything besides games, it will do just fine.
I also bought this computer for low gaming uses because of the high ram and decent graphics card. The processor isn’t really good which makes this computer useless for certain games.
Bought this Compaq CQ60-419WM for my daughter who going to College.
I hope the hard drive is durable enough to last for at least four years.
Does anyone have any experience with the hard drives they use?
My concern is not the hard drive, its the DVD Drive, Power Connector, and four hour battery, and Screen. I would tell my customers (I’m a WalMart Electronics Associate) if they wanted that kind of life span out of a computer to get a regular tower system.
Five Words: Mass Produced Electronics! Stuff Happens!
The Emachine for $398 is an Ok deal. If the tower is not an option, then get the service plan for unforeseen events. You have 90 days to look into it. I’m willing to bet the Power Connector will be the first to go on almost any brand of laptop, if its plugged and unplugged a lot. Not a cheap repair. Plus you get a years worth of Bit Defender virus and spyware protection which Cnet seems to like. A year of online backups, and North American based tech support. You do get a value deal. Ok enough with the sales pitch, which is really not ment to be. Just trying to give the best advice I can.
is it rly a good deal tho as far computers go would a twelve year old girl want it 4 her birthday presant or should i as her mom get her something better im looking 4 a cheap priced computer but not a crappy 1 tho so 4 my 12 yr old would it b considered a fast and exeptable computer
It’ll suit a 12 year old girl’s needs just fine. Though, I see very little reason for her to have a laptop at that age on the basis that it’s most likely going to be smashed to little bits. But then, I’m also of the crowd that thinks kids shouldn’t have phones until they’re at least 16. And a request for you, try to spell out your words instead of using texting shortcuts. there is very little reason not to take the extra 5 seconds to make your messages more coherent and readable.
Nick M. you must be gay, to be so perfect on your writing and telling someone they need to stop writing like there texting who cares she can write anyway she wants.
My writing isn’t perfect, nor do I act like it is. It’s just a matter of trying. If I came up to you in real life and spoke like that, you’d likely punch me in the face. At the same time, you could at the least address the main comments concern, instead of personally attacking me.
I did some more research on this model. If your girl(jenjen) likes gaming, the processor is a bit weak, but should suit her needs just fine. It’ll run any school oriented programs well, and should be great for music and video. It’s a pretty good deal for what it is, and would make a great present.
I think that too many people are allowing the world to turn into a completely useless and stupid world through their texting and computers, and through their constant need to coddle and protect other’s feelings. Get over it. Spell things correctly, use proper grammer, and stop patronizing everyone because you are worried that someone will feel sad. People need to stop acting stupid and we need to start expecting more out of others.
As for the computer, my sister bought one today knowing that I was looking for a good computer and all the comments on the site helped me to make my decision. So, thank you.
