While Hitachi launches the 7K500 2.5-inch 7200RPM 500GB hard drive, Western Digital (WD) announced new Caviar Black and RE4 hard drive that comes with 2TB capacity and operates as 7200RPM spin speed. The former is design for use on desktop PC and workstations while the RE4 is suited for enterprise systems.
WD’s Caviar Black and RE4 both have 64MB cache memory and use SATA 3Gb/s interface. They have dual processor to maximize performance and dual actuator to improve positional accuracy over the data tracks. These 7200 RPM 2TB drives includes also IntelliSeek, StableTrac and NoTouch ramp load technologies.
The RE4, designed for enterprise, features also 1.2 million hours MTBF, Active Power Save, enhanced RAFF technology, multi-axis shock sensor, native command queuing (NCQ), and pressure sensors.
WD Caviar Black 2 TB GB (model WD2001FASS) is now available for $299 and the RE4 2 TB (model WD2003FYYS) drive is currently being qualified by OEMs.
