AT&T 3G MicroCell Cellular Network Extender
by Sze | Filed under Networking
AT&T finally launches its 3G MicroCell femtocell cellular network extender. Like Vodafone’s Access Gateway and Verizon’s Network Extender, the 3G MicroCell serves as a mini cellular tower in your home or small business environment, which connects to AT&T’s network via your existing broadband Internet service (such as DSL or cable). The d evice supports up to four simultaneous users.
Unlike what we’ve seen before, the 3G MicroCell is an inverted-Y shape device. AT&T is charging $19.99, if you have internet or landline service with AT&T you pay just $9.99. If you got both, it’s free.

I live just 0.3 mile from an AT&T tower, but my LG GoPhone only works with four bars on the front porch. If I go indoors, I lose the network completely. The phone can use 850-1900MHz (4 bands), but it seems as though AT&T is using the PCS band, which is unable to penetrate trees and walls.
I was looking for a type of cellular booster, something where I could put an antenna on the roof and re-radiate the signal indoors. I do have DSL, but I don’t want to rely on DSL for a cell signal.
If I live in the city where I can get DSL and probably don’t need an extender I can get one. If I live in a rural area and don’t have DSL because it is not available and where I need an extender it isn’t available. Interesting.
