This is my first time to get so high tech – Samsung Galaxy s i9000 which is reallly perfect phone but I also have the same problem with you.
Galaxy S supported video formats: MPEG4, H.263, H.264, DivX, XviD, WMV, AVI, 3GP. The way I resolve this problem is decoding my video to formats that my phone supports.
Via google, I find Aunsoft Video Converter which is powerful in converting various video formts to Samsung Galaxy s video format listed above .
I believe It will help you out.

Take a look at the Wireless Media Stick by HSTi.
It can be used as an accessory to the Samsung Galaxy S or the HTC EVO – HD phone lines.
Stream files from your laptop through the phone to any TV,DVD,Blu-ray, PS3,Xbox, O!Play, WDTV, and any other device that can read files from the USB port.
I watched a whole 1080p HD movie streamed from my NAS to my non DLNA LG Blu-ray.
Highly recommend it.
