Sony RDR-HXD890 is a DVD/HDD dual format recorder that records to both integrated hard drive and DVD+/-R/RW discs. The recorder comes with 160/250/500GB hard drive. Other than DVD, Sony RDR-HXD890 supports also playback of CD, CD-R/-RW, VCD/SVCD, MP3, JPEG and DivX.

With great recording quality, a slick operating system, loads of features and an alluring price tag, we think this is one of the best DVD/HDD recorders on the market, which is hardly surprising given its similarity to the Pioneer’s machines we already know and love. There are a few niggles, such as the removal of RAM recording and the inability to play DivX from USB devices or transfer them to HDD, and as ever the inclusion of a single Freeview tuner on board is a major limitation – but none of these factors greatly affects our admiration for an otherwise excellent recorder.

If you’re in the market for a DVD recorder, the DRT389H ticks all the boxes – multi-format recording, Freeview+, 1080p upscaling and dual-layer support – and for just over £100 online you can’t say fairer than that. Some aspects of the deck’s operating system are a bit clumsy, and we’re not exactly enamoured by its Freeview picture quality or the performance of DVFX, but in all other respects the LG is an impressive proposition.

TrustedReviews has done a review on the Philips DVDR5520H DVD/HDD hybrid recorder. The DVDR5520H has a 250GB internal hard drive and it can also record videos on DVD-RW/-R, DVD+RW/+R and DVD+R(DL). DVD-RAM or DVD-R (DL) are not supported. The device is DivX Ultra certified and supports Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks.

Verdict from TrustedReviews:
The DVDR5520H can’t quite match the high standards set by the latest recorders from the Panasonic camp, but it comes mighty close. And in some areas, it’s actually better – in particular its live TV flexibility boosted by the terrific Time Shift Buffer, and the clever Commercial Block feature. Plus, unlike the Panasonics you can play DivX straight from the hard disk.

On the downside, the operating system isn’t as slick, it lacks Freeview Playback and a series of minor niggles prevent us from falling completely in love with it – but the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
