Samsung announced it new lines of external hard drives utilizing the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface for data transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second. Two portable hard drives and a desktop drive will be released.

Both portable hard drives offer up to 1TB capacity. One of them has curved sides for a comfortable grip and sleek, Scandinavia-inspired styling and wave-like matte finish. It comes in Brown black, Noble beige, Clay orange and Mist gray colors.

Hitachi announced the new Travelstar Z5K500, the industry’s highest capacity, one-disk, 7 millimeter (mm) z-height hard disk drive with 500GB capacity. The 2.5-inch drive uses SATA 3Gb/s interface and has 8MB cache memory. It operates at 5400RPM and features generation Advanced Format drive, which increases the physical sector size on HDDs from 512 bytes to 4,096 (4K) bytes, thereby improving drive capacity and error correction capabilities.

Super Talent announced the USB 3.0 Storage POD external hard drive (model 500H)  that offers a theoretical throughput that is 10x faster than its predecessor. The USB 3.0 hard drive is available in 500GB capacity and offers up to 90MB/s speeds. The 2.5-inch drive is also backward compatible with USB 2.0 and is USB-powered.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies launches its new Hitachi XL desktop external hard drive with 3TB capacity and USB 2.0 connectivity. The drive works with both PC and Mac offering huge storage capacity to store or backup their growing music libraries, digital photos and movie collections.

The Hitachi XL can be placed vertically or horizontally. It is also available in 1TB and 2TB. The prices are are $249.99 for 3TB, $169.99 for 2TB and $99.99 for 1TB.
