At the CES 2012, Canon adds to its PowerShot line the new flagship PowerShot G1 X prosumer digital camera. Featuring a 1.5-inch 14.3 Megapixel Canon CMOS image sensor, the G1 X gets the largest sensor to date for a PowerShot camera to deliver “approximately nine times more light sensitivity and helping to produce amazing depth-of-field and high-quality images in tough low-light conditions”. The new camera has a 4x optical zoom Canon lens.

Nikon announced the CoolPix P7100, a new prosumer level digial camera ideal for photographers who want a companion to their D-SLR camera. The new flagship P7100 has a compact and lightweight body and offer both portability and superior image quality. It sports a 10.1 Megapixel CCD sensor and a 7.1x Wide Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens (35mm equivalent to 28-200mm) constructed with two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements to help achieve high reproduction capability with less chromatic aberration when capturing images and videos.

Canon launches the new PowerShot G12, the latest addition to the company’s G-series replacing the G11. The new G12 is equipped with DIGIC 4 image processor and the HS (High Sensitivity) SYSTEM helping to produce outstanding quality in the toughest low-light conditions. It also gets 720p HD video recording capabilities.

Nikon announced a new prosumer level digital camera, the CoolPix P7000, which is “an ideal traveling companion to your DSLR, according to Nikon. The P7000, joining the P100 and P6000 P-series cameras, features 10.1 Megapixel 1/1.7-inch CCD image sensor, a 7.1x zoom wide angle NIKKOR ED glass lens with 28mm wide angle, a large optical viewfinder with diopter adjustment dial and a 3-inch LCD display.

Olympus SP-800UZ

Olympus announced two new ultra zoom digital camera, the 14 Megapixel SP-800UZ with 30x wide angle optical zoom, like FujiFilm’s HS10; and the 12 Megapixel SP-600UZ with 15x optical zoom.

FujiFilm FinePix S2550HD

Alongside the 30x zoom HS10, FujiFilm introduces the FinePix S2550HD (aka S2600HD and previously tipped as S2500HD) and the FinePix S1800 (aka S1880), both have a Fujinon 28mm Wide-Angle lens with 18x optical zoom and a 12 Megapixel CCD sensor.

FujiFilm introduces the FinePix HS10 (aka HS11), a new advanced long-zoom digital camera designed to offer performance of a DSLR system without the bulk or expense. The HS10 features a 10.3 Megapixel Back Side Illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor and a 24mm wide angle lens with 30x optical zoom.

FujiFilm’s FinePix S200EXR is a ultra long zoom camera with a Fujinon 14.3x optical zoom lens and 28mm wide angle. The S200EXR features 12 Megapixel EXR image sensor, EXR Priority, …

Pentax X70 is a prosumer ultra zoom digital camera with a 24x optical zoom lens. It has a 12 Megapixel image sensor and offers 50-6400 ISO. The camera has a high-speed shooting mode that takes up to 11 photos per second and is able to record 720p HD video clips. The camera has a 2.7-inch LCD screen.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is the first camera to feature Sony’s 1/2.4-inch Exmor CMOS sensor technology providing burst speeds of 10fps at full 9.1 megapixel resolution. The HX1 offers 20x super zoom, 28mm wide angle, Optical SteadyShot and face detection. It is able to record 1080p Full HD video.

Looking at the market as a whole, with an emphasis on image quality, we just cannot give the Sony DSC-HX1 our highest recommendation, but it’s certainly worth consideration if you’re looking for a superzoom compact and can live with the inevitable image quality compromises.
